Sustainability Insight Center

“How can I reduce the carbon footprint associated with my companies IT estate?”

The HPE GreenLake Sustainability Insight Center service provides a current view of the total energy, carbon emissions and cost for HPE compute, storage, and networking devices along with third party devices and public cloud. The MVP launched in January 2024 and we are currently working on our phase 2 releases.

I led the following initiatives as part of the MVP and subsequent releases:

  • View insights from charts showing carbon emissions, energy consumption and energy cost.

  • Export a report over a desired time period.

  • Import device data from external ITOM providers to get a full view of your IT estate, regardless of device make.

  • Integrate public cloud resources from AWS, Azure and Google.

  • Create custom cost and carbon coefficients to incorporate more granular, accurate data based on power purchase agreements.

  • Monitor anomalous behavior that impacts your carbon footprint with device anomaly detection.

  • Control your personal currency display preferences to allow for global teams to work together.

Discovery and exploration

This project started in HPE’s Innovation Lab where technologists look to solve forward-thinking problems in the AI and sustainability spaces.

During discovery, I:
Performed competitive analysis
Held introductory Innovation Lab alignment sessions

I collaborated with the research and inclusion team, conducting a sustainability survey with 24 questions and 37 participants to understand how companies with sustainability practice prioritize metrics, filters and reporting.

The research findings were pulled into an offsite we had during the week of June 22, 2023. We met with BU representatives, the Innovation Lab team and the leads from each domain and created a roadmap with priority items for the MVP and iteratively designed core functionality. Since this was a team effort during the week of the offsite, we had already decided on a simple user flow to design and test. We treated the project like a design sprint to be sure we could validate and develop the product quickly with agile practices.

Design

Designing based on our discovery findings and offsite materials, I created a prototype to be shared with users in a usability studies prioritizing the critical data point rankings we received from the research.

The top three metrics were as follows:
Energy consumption by kWh
Actual carbon emissions
Cost of energy consumption

We found that some users level of sustainability maturity in their business practices was still pretty new so we focused on the basics and would add more capabilities post-MVP based on ongoing customer sessions.

The usability study had 6 participants and some insights that surfaced were that the concept was exciting because it saves time compared to manually calculating their sustainability metrics a few times a year. Being able to view this data easily and frequently will support their growing sustainability practices and can function as a report to their c-level executives.

The study was a success and in addition to validating our initial concepts, we gained so many ideas for future features that are already in the works.

Current implementation

The product is simple yet effective and we are adding capabilities in our latest release based on direct customer feedback. Below is a view of the current implementation, which is not far off from our initial usability study. I am happy to share more case study details along with prototypes for any of the features listed in this project in a portfolio review.
